At the beginning of January 2016, NUVIA a.s. has finished a successful pilot project. In cooperation with Belgian company IBA – world market leader in area of devices for diagnosing and curing cancer. The objective of this project was to design and develop a mobile shielding system enabling production of radiopharmaceutical 015 in a close proximity of the patient. The end customer was a medical facility in Japan.
The supply of special shielding sarcophagus for 3D cyclotron was divided into several parts. At first, the optimized (in the meaning of weight) shape of two concrete shells was designed. These shells were then used to create a special casting mold and reinforcing armatures.
After that, a concrete mixture with density about 3600 kg/m3 was tested, and the results exceeded all the expectations in the test of homogeneity of the concrete mixture in the final product. Following was the process of designing and producing steel frames used to consolidate the concrete parts and which enabled their movement on the rails. The front part of the shielding is driven by a motor with a transmission, the rear part is driven by a manual drive.
We also need to mention that the area of contact of both halves of the sarcophagus is designed into a shape of shielding lock which prevents the leakage of an ionizing radiation into its surroundings.
